A macabre sense of humor or did the sender really jump? No records have been kept of early day suicide jumps off the Brooklyn Bridge, so we will have to guess: joke or jump?
The addressee is rather an astonishing distinguished surprise! Miss Elizabeth May McCorkle of North Carolina, was wife to ruling church elder Mr. Orin Datus Davis.
Mr. Davis has served the church in various ways, including the guardianship of its invested funds. He has been its representative many times in Presbyteries and Synods, and was a Commissioner to meetings of the General Assembly in Lexington, Virginia, and Bristol, Tennessee. He also was founder of the Davis and Wiley Bank of North Carolina which dates back to the mid 1800’s.
In his married life Mr. Davis was fortunate as in other matters. Seeking guidance from the “Giver of all Good“, he selected Miss Elizabeth May McCorkle as his helpmate and companion in life aka wife. She is the eldest daughter of the late James M. McCorkle, Esq., a leading lawyer of the Salisbury Bar, and a lineal descendant of Colonel Richard Brandon of Revolutionary fame. Colonel Brandon’s daughter, Elizabeth, it will be remembered, was the “little woman” who provided a hasty breakfast for General George Washington on the occasion of his visit to Salisbury in 1781 ! So Elizabeth May McCorkle is the daughter of the “little woman” who served George Washington breakfast. Amazing the things you discover when researching old postcards!!

Photo of the day: RUST NEVER SLEEPS – As time marches on, there is one thing that is consistent and that is that rust never sleeps. It marches on and slowly eats away at decades worth of our history. It also happens to be the title of a live record album by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young and American band Crazy Horse. It was released on July 2, 1979, by Reprise Records. The title is borrowed from the slogan for Rust-Oleum paint, and was suggested by Mark Mothersbaugh of the new wave band Devo.

Photo of the day: COVERING BROOKLYN BRIDGE – Strolling the Brooklyn Bridge is always a breathtaking experience. The trick is to start in Brooklyn Heights and first take in the view from DUMBO and the Heights then cross the bridge as Manhattan looms larger and large in front of you. On a crisp blue spring day it is always thrilling to me. Don’t forget to look down so you can see the cars below and the barges passing in the river. Don’t forget to look straight ahead so you see the spider web design of the cables. Don’t forget to look up so you can take in the majestic gothic arches of each tower. Currently the bridge is going through it’s final stage of renovations following the total overhaul of 1983 for it’s 100 year anniversary. Heralded as the first large suspension bridge ever built by my people, the German Roebling family, at a little over a mile long it stands as one of New York’s and America’s true treasures. Come cross it with me sometime!

Photo of the day: I FOUND I COULD SAY THINGS WITH COLOR… – “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way, things I had no words for” is a quote by famed American iconic painter Georgia O’Keefe (1887 – 1986) and used here in a painting by 5 Pointz curator and “Whitewash” artist Meres One Cohen. It is haunting to think that her words from a long ago generation would apply so well to today’s generation of street, graffiti and mural artists today.

Photo of the day: WELCOME TO THE 1964 WORLD’S FAIR 50 YEARS LATER! – I had the great pleasure of being one of the thousands that attended the 50th anniversary of the opening of the spectacular and futuristic New York World’s Fair today. The crowds on a Passover Tuesday were twice what they expected – and I was one of the lucky ones that got in to see the New York State Pavilion, those very George Jetson looking buildings still standing. Some of you may remember it as the 1997 “Men In Black” towers.
Mom and my parents took me to the fair several times and to be there today with good friends was surreal. I was even a part of a CBS news feature (video to follow). I took over 500+ photos so it will take me a while to sift, sort and edit since I am touring till Monday. I even have photos of a world champion rock climber climbing the Unishpere! Stay Tuned!

I stopped by the “Whitewash” exhibit at the Jeffrey Leder Gallery to say hello and was shown that I have 5 red dots – meaning 5 of my photos have sold. OMG! I was speechless (a rare occasion!). 5 photos/5 Pointz! Thanks to my dear friends Marie Flageul and Meres Cohen you are making a dream come true. I am so proud of the fantastic, stirring, emotional and historically significant show – come see the amazing art work of artists Auks, Cortes, Jerms, Just One, Meres One, Orestes Gonzalez, Poem, Shiro, See TF, Hunt Rodriguez, Topaz and Zimad documenting a piece of art history destroyed forever. The burning passion of 5 Pointz lives on!

Photo of the day: A BUNNY TAIL – The Nestle’s Quick bunny made an appearance at a local Greenwich Village Easter fair recently. He was very adorable and bounced around and danced so much with the little kids that his tail came loose. His cameraman quickly alerted “Quick” so they tried to find a secluded corner over by the vegetables and flowers that were still being set up.
That excited these two little girls who wanted to know if even chocolate bunnies really do love their carrots so much. The entire time they were so enchanted by Mr. Bunny that they were clueless that he was having his tail put back on.
“Ah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I love carrots.”
“Ok, move it along kids.”
“Yeah, I’m gonna eat the carrots, in a minute, now give Mr. Bunny some privacy, move it along kid….”
